Notts Roller Derby Players: shot for Leftlion
This was a shoot for Nottingham’s LeftLion newspaper. They profiled three local roller derby teams: Nottingham Roller Girls, the Hellfire Harlots and Mansfield Misfits and this photo features members of each team.
The shoot was arranged to take place at a leisure centre - so I had visions of having lots of space to work in. On arrival I discovered that there was another roller derby team (a male team) practising in the sports hall. It meant we had to do our shoot in the corner, with guys hurtling past us on skates the whole time. Health and safety, anyone? It certainly added a level of ‘danger’ to the shoot which tied in nicely with the vibe of the sport itself (which is super good fun to go and watch, by the way).
One more note on this shoot - big thanks to Carla Mundy, whose assistance was vital in getting these shots, and to Penny Reeve for commissioning me. Also thanks to the girls from NRG, Hellfire Harlots and Mansfield Misfits for being such fun.

We’re finally getting our team kit ordered. Soon, I will be skating with my name and number on my back. I am so excited!

this is how I felt the first time I kicked 25 in 5’s ass!

Roller Derby, 25 in 5 update

So I forgot all about this blog, until now.

The last thing I posted was a reblog about getting 25 laps in 5 minutes, as part of the minimum skills assessment for Roller Derby.
Since then I have achieved over 25 [and half] laps in 5 minutes, twice. The first time was a month ago, and the second time was 2 weeks ago - we have to try to do 25 in 5 at least once a fortnight, and I did it two fortnights in a row.

That’s the last thing to check off of my minimum skills list. BOOYAH!

Next up, 26 laps and beyond!

I would like to thank my beautiful skates for helping me accomplish this

So, I have to take the WFTDA skills test, tomorrow, for the 3rd time. The first time was April 2011 after going through a 12 week Freshmeat bootcamp. The second time was August 2011 to try out for my league’s travel team. My league is very serious about skater safety, so everyone in the league…

25 in 5 is the bane of my life! I am definitely going to try this on Thursday.

I’ve had a breakthrough with my final year project/dissertation in the past few days. I managed to make a pinhole image using the ramshackle camera I made!
0.18mm pinhole - the view from my bedroom window.

It’s a minor sucess, meaning that my makeshift darkroom works!
Now that I know that I can actually produce something that resembles a photograph, I feel that I can move on to my experiments with slit imaging.

Just as soon as I get enough money to buy more photo paper, that is.

I am SO making these for Martin’s 26th Birthday… EPIC!
